Germany loses export crown to China

With Germany suffering its worst recession since World War II, booming exports in China have given the Asian economy the global edge. But Europe¿s largest economy is showing signs of improvement.

French court refuses to annul rape verdict against German father

A French court has refused to annul its judgement against Rudolf C., a German national sent to prison in 1997 for raping his eight year-old daughter. The girl, now an adult, has always denied any abuse took place.

Opel unveils restructuring plan

The head of German carmaker Opel, Nick Reilly, presented a plan on Tuesday for revamping the ailing General Motors unit, forecasting a loss of some 8,000 jobs across Europe and asking for government aid.

Pyramid Race 2010

This year’s Pyramid Race (32nd Pyramidenlauf 2010), organized by the School in Dokki (Deutsche Evangelische Oberschule Kairo) will take place on Friday, 5th March 2010 at 08.30 a.m. The 8 km-long run is open to schools, organized groups and the general public. Start and finish will be in front of the Mykerinos Pyramid, which is the smallest of the three pyramids in Giza. Drive in car pools, avoid coming in your own car! Park your car where you are advised by the police! Admission to the pyramid area ends at 08.15 a.m.

Registration: from February 24th till March 3rd, 2010 in the administration of the Deutsche Evangelische Oberschule

Admission fee: students of the DEO 10 LE, external students 20 LE, adults 50 LE. Late registration March 3rd, 2010, 08.00 am, 70 LE.

Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany

To kick off Ambiente – the leading international trade fair for Giving and Living – in Frankfurt am Main, the traditional ceremony honouring the winners of the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany is being held in February. The award-winning product ideas will be on show in the Galleria at the Exhibition Centre throughout the fair (from 12 to 16 February).

"Fasching", "Fasnacht", "Karneval" 2010

"Fasching", "Fasnacht" or "Karneval" are all terms used to describe carnival, an ancient tradition which is celebrated all over Germany but particularly in the Rhineland and in the strongly Catholic regions of Germany. Mainz, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Bonn are hotbeds of carnival fun. In southern Germany the traditional Alemannic Fasnet is celebrated. The "fifth season" begins on 11 November and ends on Ash Wednesday. Carnival season reaches its climax in the week from "schmutziger Donnerstag" (literally: "dirty Thursday") to Ash Wednesday.

Berlinale Celebrates with 400 Films

“The birthday cake of nearly 400 films has been baked,” announces festival director Dieter Kosslick. The 60th Berlin International Film Festival begins on 11 February. The flurry of flashbulbs, the red carpet, the film stars: the Berlinale promises ten days of great cinema in the German capital. The 60th birthday of the festival, which first saw the light of the film world in 1951, is also being celebrated by Hollywood greats like director Martin Scorsese, who is presenting his new film Shutter Island with the two actors Leonardo de Caprio and Ben Kingsley.

European Capital of Culture: the Ruhr celebrates

Smoking chimneys and mines, coal and steel: for many decades these were the symbols of the Ruhr, Germany’s largest industrial belt. With 53 cities and around 5.3 million inhabitants, the third largest conurbation in Europe will be showing its new face as European Capital of Culture in 2010.

Germany-South Africa: Let's stay Friends - From 2006 to 2010 and beyond

A new special website is dedicated to showcase the support Germany gives to football projects in South Africa. Germany and South Africa have enjoyed a close partnership for many years. With this in mind, it is no surprise that Germany and South Africa, as consecutive hosts of FIFA Football World Cups, also work closely together in this area.

The site, in English and German, also offers useful information to all visitors and international football fans about the event and its host country. The FIFA Football World Cup 2010  will show the world a new, more dynamic face of Africa.
